Many of us know what Jesus did for us on the cross 2,000 years ago and we know that we call that day "Good Friday". But what could be so good about our God sending his son to die a death that he didnt deserve? The answer is that what he did for us on that day was the greatest feat of humanity this world has ever seen.
Even though we know that Jesus was God, he was still a man. He felt pain, sorrow and reject. On this day we call good friday he went through the ultimate suffering so that we wouldnt have to be bound by the shackles of sin anymore.
Jesus came for this purpose, the crux of his entire ministry rested on what he would do on this day. The Bible is very clear in saying that at any time during this day, Jesus could have asked for his father to deliver him from the hands of these evil men, but he didnt! He, "For the joy that was set before him, endured the cross". The joy was a relationship with humanity that could only come throught the breaking of his physical body. By enduring the cross, the veil of the temple was ripped in two, symbolizing that God's presence isnt confined to a temple any longer but it lives on the inside of all those who will belive in his name!
We as Christians have an unbeatable force living on the inside of us. The same spirit that raised Christ from the dead is here today, living inside of our hearts! The same spirit that could look the cross in the face and not even flinch, is at work right now on the inside of our lives. There is nothing that can stand in the way of a Christian when we will understand this. We no longer have to worry about sin having a hold on our lives any longer! Jesus came to destroy the power of sin over our lives.
The question then is this: If Jesus went to the cross for us, where do you think he would lead us? The words of Jesus tell us that a servant is no greater than his master. If Jesus suffered this crucifixion, wont we also have to? Paul the apostle wrote in Gal. 2:20 "I am Crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live but it is Christ that lives in me." Paul wasnt talking about a physical crucifixion but one that takes place by getting our flesh under control, not giving in to its desires to sin or becoming lazy with the things that God has commissioned us to do.
Jesus didnt die so that Christions could live a life full of boredom, laziness and comfort. He died so that we could live an adventurous life with him forever. Most of all, he didnt die so that we could have him all to ourselves. Jesus isnt a secret that we must keep for only ourselves and our families. We must get the good news of the gospel out for the world to know. The gospel if Jesus isnt one of condemnation and judgement, but its one of freedom from the bondage of sin. When we will love people enough to show them a way out of their sin, then we will walk in what God has called us to do! And that is why good friday is so good. |
